Lot description
Grade: XF
Reference: Sear 1259 var., MIB 40 var.

Silver, weight 7,01 g, 22 mm. A very rare coin in an unusual, excellent state for this type - one of the most beautiful ever to appear on the market. This unique hexagram is also the only known specimen minted in the 10th Officina in Constantinople, not recorded in the literature. Coin with provenance.

Ex Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung, Auction 211, lot 805, 04.03.2013.

The hexagrams of Justinian II from the first period of his reign are among the very rare coins, and the very small circulation of these silver issues is evidenced by the fact that no dedicated dies were made for their production, and they were struck with dies of the much more common solidi, as demonstrated by the researcher of byzantine coinage Philip Grierson. The offered hexagram and analogous solids are also the first representations of Jesus Christ in the history of numismatics, which was related to the decisions of the Trullan Synod, which took place in 692 in Constantinople.
